Front-of-House Workers at Halifax’s Neptune Theatre Join IATSE Local 680

HALIFAX, NS – Front-of-house workers at Neptune Theatre in Halifax, Nova Scotia voted overwhelmingly to join the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 680 in August 2026, with 78.6% of the bargaining unit voting in favor of representation. The newly certified unit covers approximately 30 Box Office, Usher, and Bartender positions at the largest theatre company in Canada’s Atlantic provinces.

Located in downtown Halifax, Neptune Theatre presents a diverse season of classical drama, contemporary international works, and new Canadian plays to audiences of over 400 patrons. The certification, which came approximately 7.5 months after filing, marks a significant expansion of union coverage at the venue.

Local 680 has a longstanding relationship with Neptune Theatre, having represented the venue’s stagehands for years. With this victory, front-of-house workers join their backstage colleagues under the IATSE umbrella, completing union representation across the theatre’s workforce.

“This is an exciting victory for the previously unrepresented front-of-house workers at Neptune Theatre,” said Colin Richardson, Business Agent for IATSE Local 680. “Local 680 has a long history of representing the stagehands at Neptune. We are thrilled to welcome our new brothers, sisters, and kin into the IATSE family, and we look forward to supporting them in achieving better wages and working conditions.”

The workers themselves reflected on what the victory means to them. “As front-of-house, bar, and box office staff at Neptune Theatre, we’re feeling empowered and proud to know that all our hard work of coming together to take a stand for ourselves has come through,” said an anonymous member of the bargaining unit and organizing committee. “IATSE has been behind us every step of the process, and it feels amazing to move forward with this support.”
