TORONTO, ON – On March 28, carpenters at the Young People’s Theatre voted unanimously for representation by IATSE Local 58. The carpenters approached Local 58 in early March and after some discussion with Local representatives, the certification was filed with the Ontario Labour Relations Board on March 21. The vote was held the following week.
The Young People’s Theatre (YPT) is Toronto’s oldest not-for-profit theatre company and operates two performance spaces; the Susan Douglas Rubes Theatre and the Nathan Cohen Studio. It stages an average of eight productions each year.
With the carpentry shop soon to be under agreement, this marks a full sweep for IATSE Local 58, which now represents all stagehands in the venue. The good news comes on the heels of a successful certification of the scenic artists at the YPT by IATSE Local 828, who voted for representation last month. The new IATSE members are looking forward to continuing the work that they do for this great employer, for the first time under a union agreement.
