IATSE Organizes Nasco Staffing Solutions

IATSE Local 891 has won a significant victory after a lengthy and extensive organizing campaign with Nasco Staffing Solutions. An application for certification was filed at the BC Labour Board on January 24, 2009 after Nasco employees approached IATSE Local 891 seeking union representation (production setup employees who staff live events, music concerts and trade shows). The vote took place on February 16 and 17, 2009 for a bargaining unit of 330 employees. The ballot was counted on February 19, 2009 with the outcome of 108 voting in favour of representation by IATSE Local 891 and only 69 against.

Nasco Staffing Solutions is the largest on-demand event staffing company in Canada. Some of its British Columbia clients include Sea to Sky, Live Nation, GM Place, The Commodore Ballroom, and Bell Centre for the Performing Arts.

This certification is one of the largest in British Columbia in the last 5 years. The agreed to bargaining unit was 330, putting this in context, the average new bargaining unit in British Columbia is 32.

International President, Matthew D. Loeb has commented on this victory “I would like to congratulate the organizers and officers of Local 891 for this remarkable achievement. There are no short cuts when it comes to organizing and this achievement would not have been accomplished without an incredible amount of work. This is an important step in organizing non union labour contractors in Canada and in the United States who work in our industries.”
