TORONTO, ON– Front-of-house workers at Scotiabank Theatre Toronto have voted to join IATSE Local B173, becoming the second Cineplex in the city to join the union. It is one of the city’s largest movie theatres and is best known as one of the major venues for the annual Toronto International Film Festival. In 2023, workers at Cineplex Empress Walk also voted to join the IATSE and are currently in the process of bargaining their first collective agreement.
“It is always inspiring to see workers come together and vote to have more of a say at their workplace,” said IATSE International Representative Rajean Hoilett. “These courageous workers have taken the first step in improving their working conditions.”
Workers at Fever Candlelight Concerts Toronto also recently voted to join the IATSE. These victories are part of the IATSE-Reps-FOH campaign that continues to gain momentum in the GTA.
Following the Scotiabank Theatre Toronto vote, Local B173 Business Agent Brandy Lynn McAllister stated, “We are very excited to have another group of workers from Cineplex join IATSE Local B173, and look forward to assisting them in bargaining their first collective agreement.”
