IATSE Local 58 Wins Certification of Young Centre for the Performing Arts

IATSE Local 58 won a representation vote to secure bargaining rights for stagehands working at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, which houses the Soulpepper Theatre Company. On July 8, 2009, the Ontario Labour Relations Board issued a decision in which it certified Local 58 as the bargaining agent for all stage employees employed at the Young Centre in the City of Toronto.

Soulpepper, established in 1997, is a classical repertory theatre founded by twelve of Canada’s leading theatre artists. Their goal was to combine three areas; classical theatre, mentorship, and training, and to keep the artists and their work at the centre of the organization. All twelve founding members are still actively involved in the company, which is located at the 44,000 square-foot Young Centre for the Performing Arts.
