More Workers at Tarragon Theatre Vote to Join IATSE

TORONTO, ON– Scenic artists and props builders at the Tarragon Theatre have become the latest group to vote for IATSE representation. After reaching out to IATSE Local 828 in early March, discussions began and the process moved very quickly. Local 828 filed an application for certification on March 17, and the representation vote was held on March 27. Results released the following day by the Ontario Labour Relations Board demonstrated unanimous support. The Labour Board’s decision awards IATSE Local 828 sole bargaining rights for scenic artists and props builders at the Tarragon, and it includes Heads of Department.

Founded in 1970, Tarragon Theatre is one of the main centres for contemporary playwriting in Canada. The building was once a cribbage board factory and now houses the 205-seat Mainspace and the 113-seat Extra Space. The theatre is highly respected for its development, creation and encouragement of new work. Stagehands at the Tarragon voted in April 2019 for representation by IATSE Local 58.

IATSE Local 828 Business Agent Hale Reap stated, “This was my first certification as a new Business Agent, so it felt extra special. I’m thrilled to be able to welcome Tarragon’s scenic artists and props builders into Local 828. We look forward to ensuring these talented artists and artisans can continue to do the work they love under the security of a collective agreement.”
